Is there such a thing as a Certified Indexer?
In my opinion no. Not really. The American Society for Indexing addressed this issue at length several years ago. The result was a determination that certifying indexers is not feasible.
Indexing is an art form, much like writing. Just as the writer has rules that he follows in the form of grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. indexers have acceptable practices to follow as well. Beyond these guidelines, indexing, like writing, becomes a creation reflecting the style, imagination, and knowledge of the indexer. As a result there really is no one qualified to “certify” another indexer as each indexer's work is very individual. They may review or critique the work of a fellow indexer as professional colleagues.
ASI does not promote or endorse certification. Indexers who have started their own company or organization to certify indexers for a fee do so without the support or endorsement of the American Society for Indexing. Although experienced and respected indexers, there is nothing and no one, outside of themselves, that has given them the authority to certify other indexers.
So how do you choose a qualified indexer?
As always, Vermillion Indexing Professionals will be happy to provide a referral if we are unable to meet your needs!
